#Nom4Nepal

With today’s news of another earthquake in Nepal, we are thinking of our friends in the country. In particular, Sarah Levine has reached out to share a relief effort she is spearheading. It’s rooted in Nepalese culture, our common love for food and hopefully your participation.

With Why We Give, we have leveraged the power of food to raise funds to make a difference: remember how much fun we had with National Muffin Day (#givemuffins)? Join Sarah and us with #Nom4Nepal:

“Nepal is well known for the famous greeting ‘namaste.’ What typically follows is ‘bhat khayo?’ which translates to ‘Have you eaten rice?'”

Unfortunately, the answer that the people of Nepal are able to give is not the usual one – they are hungry, suffering, and mourning.

“It’s been over 2 weeks since the earthquake, CNN seldom posts, and people around the world are still putting their delish food porn posts on social media and forgetting that thousands here (in Nepal) are still hungry and not knowing when they will eat or have freshwater. We are trying to bring water sanitation and hygiene to villages. Less than 95% of the places we tested have safe drinking water.”

Her vision is to get people to easily give back while doing something fun.

“As we scroll through pinterest for new recipes and filter our foodporn on instagram, pledge a portion of what you spent on that grub to assisting Nepal. Let’s get creative!”

Ideas to give back include the following:

  • Organize a bake sale at the office
  • Put together a dinner party
  • Encourage your local restaurant to donate
  • Pledge an additional 10% of your dinner date bill

In 5 easy steps you can participate:

Nom for Nepal – Join the Facebook Community!

Sarah has several suggested for where to donate based on her experience on the ground.

“I know that the funds will go directly to mobilize communities (particularly marginalized indigenous ones) to help themselves.”

These include the following organizations:
